Athletic Bilbao: first win brings renewed confidence

Athletic Bilbao endured a difficult opening to the campaign, suffering a 3-1 defeat against Sevilla before losing 2-0 to Barcelona. The Basques finally found their rhythm last weekend, securing a 2-0 away victory over Celta Vigo, with Álex Berenguer and Robert Navarro getting on the scoresheet.

San Mamés could once again prove to be an uncomfortable venue for Atletico. Athletic defeated Simeone’s side 1-0 at home last season, although their overall recent record is less encouraging, with Atletico winning four of the previous five meetings.

Atletico Madrid: unbeaten start and plenty of new faces

Atletico have enjoyed a solid beginning to the new La Liga season. Simeone’s men opened with a 2-0 win over Malaga, followed it with a 2-2 draw against Villarreal, and then defeated Sevilla 3-1. Their seven points from three games leave them unbeaten and firmly among the early contenders.

The Madrid club also made several notable additions during the summer, bringing in Morten Hjulmand, Lee Kang-in, Cristian Romero, Alejandro Grimaldo and Jonathan David. Julián Álvarez has returned to training as well and could potentially make the squad for this encounter.
