Porto: Farioli’s side have been extremely difficult to break down

Francesco Farioli could scarcely have wished for a stronger opening to the domestic season. Porto currently lead the Primeira Liga after winning all five of their matches, scoring 11 times while conceding just once. That solitary goal came in their most recent outing, although the Dragons still managed to beat Moreirense 2-1 after falling behind early, with Jan Bednarek and William Gomes finding the net.

Porto have been especially impressive when defending without the ball. Farioli has shaped the team around a compact 4-3-3 system, with Pablo Rosario, Victor Froholdt and Gabri Veiga providing balance in midfield, while William Gomes and Pepê offer pace and directness from the flanks. Their latest performance against Moreirense also highlighted their attacking pressure, with Porto registering 23 shots and nine on target.

The Portuguese champions do, however, have several fitness concerns. Samu remains out and is not expected to return until November, while Zaidu, Vasco Sousa, André Miranda and Oskar Pietuszewski have also been affected by injuries. Farioli did receive an attacking boost against Moreirense, as Santiago Giménez returned to the squad and made an appearance from the bench, giving him another option alongside André Silva.

Manchester City: Maresca’s new-look side continue to deliver

Manchester City also travel to Porto with a perfect domestic record. Enzo Maresca’s team have won each of their opening three Premier League fixtures, defeating Bournemouth 2-1, Crystal Palace 4-1 and Coventry 1-0. The latest victory may not have been particularly eye-catching, but City once again demonstrated their ability to control matches and grind out the result Maresca demands.

Erling Haaland remains the focal point of their attacking threat. His header secured the win over Coventry and brought his league tally to three goals this season. City have also begun integrating several new faces into their attacking structure, with Enzo Fernández and Iliman Ndiaye making their debuts against Coventry, Elliot Anderson quickly becoming an important midfield presence and Rayan Cherki already playing a prominent role in the final third.

There is a minor concern surrounding Nico O’Reilly, who withdrew during the warm-up before the Coventry game because of a back issue. Maresca has suggested that the problem is not serious. Jérémy Doku is another player currently unavailable, but City still possess significant depth and plenty of attacking alternatives.
